Glass Fiber vs. Carbon Fiber: A Must-Read Guide for Newcomers in Composite Material Selection

Hits: 44 img

In the field of composite materials, the selection between glass fiber and carbon fiber has always been a focus of industry attention. For newcomers just entering the field, the choice between the two directly affects project costs and final results. Recently, industry experts have analyzed the differences between the two from multiple dimensions to provide professional references for selection.
Represented by E-glass fiber, glass fiber has a density of 2.5-2.6g/cm³, a tensile strength of 3.0-3.5GPa, a long-term service temperature of 200-300°C, and excellent corrosion resistance and insulation. Its greatest advantage lies in cost-effectiveness, with a price of only 15-30 yuan per kilogram and ordinary glass fiber cloth costing 20-50 yuan per square meter. Moreover, it has low processing difficulty, can be cut with ordinary scissors, and has good resin wettability, making it suitable for student experiments, small-batch production, and mass production of civil products.
Represented by T300/T700, carbon fiber has a density of only 1.7-1.8g/cm³, a tensile strength of 3.5-7.0GPa, an elastic modulus of 200-240GPa, and a long-term service temperature of over 400-500°C. Although it has outstanding performance, it is expensive, with a price 5-10 times that of glass fiber. Processing requires special tools, and the black dust generated during cutting is harmful, resulting in a high operating threshold.
Selection should follow three major principles: when the budget is limited and performance requirements are not extreme, glass fiber is the first choice; when pursuing lightweight, high rigidity, high temperature resistance and the budget is sufficient, carbon fiber can be selected; newcomers are advised to practice with glass fiber first. Currently, glass fiber is widely used in scenarios such as FRP furniture and chemical equipment, while carbon fiber is indispensable in fields such as UAVs, aerospace, and high-end sports equipment.
