Inorganic silicate coating-ecological and environmental protection

Hits: 807 img

One of the most important factors in choosing materials for the construction industry is sustainability and environmental friendliness. Environmental protection is the core advantage of inorganic mineral coatings, both in terms of the product itself and the impact of the production process on the environment.
Inorganic silicate coatings only contain natural raw materials, and generally do not contain solvents, film-forming aids (plasticizers), antiseptics and other chemical components that may be discharged into the surrounding environment-which means that it is harmful to the people who use it. The surrounding environment is safe.
The ecological advantages of inorganic mineral coatings include the following:

1. Long life protection and decoration
The superior durability of inorganic silicate coatings is a guarantee of their use as sustainable materials, because they reduce the need for repeated recoating and at the same time reduce the impact on the environment.

2. Easy to recoat
When recoating traditional organic coatings, it is necessary to remove part or all of the paint on the old wall to obtain a satisfactory coating effect. Otherwise, serious quality problems such as peeling, cracking, and peeling are prone to occur. Removal of old coatings is an expensive process. In addition to consuming a lot of manpower costs for shoveling walls, scraping putty, and material costs for putty and paint, it also includes waste disposal and removal costs. The inorganic silicate coating forms a chemical bond with the substrate and can become a part of the substrate. There is no need to remove the old coating during any subsequent repainting. You only need to use a high-pressure water gun to clean off the dust and other impurities on the coating surface. Painting, thereby saving time, money and reducing waste, while greatly reducing environmental pollution.

3. Reduce the number of recoats and save costs
The European Solway & District Housing Association conducted an independent investigation to apply inorganic silicate coatings, high-quality latex paints and ordinary low-cost engineering latex paints to unpainted and painted exterior wall surfaces. After thirty years Long-term observation and comparison found that: inorganic coatings only need two coatings and three coatings; high-quality latex paints need four coatings and seven coatings; while ordinary low-cost engineering latex paints require ten coatings, eleven Road coating. It shows that the inorganic silicate coating system provides the most economical long-term solution.

4. Reduce carbon dioxide emissions during production
In 1996, Trischler & Partners of Freiburg, Germany conducted an independent survey comparing inorganic silicate paints with traditional acrylic exterior wall latex paints. The relevant summary in the report is as follows:
The study considered the exterior decoration of a residence (200 square meters of surface area) for more than 50 years, and compared the silicate paint system with the acrylic latex paint system. Evaluate each system, from raw materials to refurbishment, and check energy consumption, emissions, wastewater, general waste, and carbon dioxide emissions, as shown in Table 26 below.

5. Air permeability-dry walls consume less heat
The coating film of the inorganic silicate coating is a porous, air-permeable coating, which allows water vapor to volatilize from the substrate while preventing rainwater from entering. Therefore, the water content of interior and exterior walls decorated with inorganic silicate coatings will gradually decrease. Considering the energy consumption of indoor thermal insulation, a wall with a high water content has a high thermal conductivity, and the loss of energy is more. The semi-permeable coating of inorganic silicate paint will keep the building walls dry, have better thermal insulation effect and reduce energy consumption.

6. High reflectivity
Due to the microscopic porous matt structure of the inorganic silicate coating, the light reflectivity of the inorganic coating in the same color is higher than that of the traditional film-forming coating. In fact, this means that even on cloudy days, buildings painted with inorganic silicate paint will appear brighter and more vibrant. Moreover, economic benefits can also be obtained through the high reflectivity of inorganic silicate coatings.
In the early 1990s, the Kent County Council in the United Kingdom evaluated the inorganic silicate coating for the inner wall coating of the new A20 Folkestone double-hole tunnel. One aspect of their investigation was to determine the level of lighting in the tunnel. Compared with the organic film-forming paints considered, the super-reflectivity of inorganic silicate coatings can reduce the level of lighting. Based on this, engineers calculated that the energy savings that can be saved over a 30-year period by using inorganic silicate coatings is equivalent to the initial cost of decorating the tunnel.
A similar test result was also verified by an on-site lighting test. It was completed by Hopkins architects. They used inorganic silicate paint to decorate the 30,000 square meters of interior walls at the Tax Office headquarters in Nottingham. Conducted field experiments and tests.

7. No solvent release during manufacturing and use
Inorganic silicate coatings are water-based, solution-free, and extremely low-VOC coatings; at the same time, non-renewable petroleum is not used as raw materials in the production process, but more than 90% of the inorganic minerals in the earth's crust are used as raw materials; and In the process of use, there is no need to use organic solvents to dilute. At the same time, the inorganic coating product itself and related processes have the least impact on the environment. Therefore, inorganic silicate coatings are easier to obtain various environmental protection and sustainable product certifications.
