It was one afternoon in March that I met the headmaster Ge Jun. At that time, affected by the epidemic, the secondary school affiliated to Nanjing Normal University in Jiangsu Province (hereinafter referred to as "the secondary school affiliated to Nanjing Normal University") had not yet opened, but the bright sunshine and warm air made the campus of this hundred year old school still full of life. Before the students arrived, Ge Jun was still busy with complicated administrative affairs, splitting his time into pieces, but he was used to it for a long time.
Due to the epidemic, the school was postponed, which made the "senior three party" who was preparing for the college entrance examination feel nervous, and Ge Jun could not help worrying. However, all is well. The excellent teachers' team and students' group in the Affiliated High School of South teachers' college give him confidence to deal with the sudden crisis. After eight years of working in this school, Ge Jun continued to write about the brilliant achievements made by the former principals, and also faced all the challenges given to the school by the new era and new environment, including the epidemic. As always, he is confident, firm and full of hope for everything.
He is the "mathematical emperor" and also a famous headmaster
Compared with many high school principals, Ge Jun's career is a little special. In 1985, he was admitted to the school of mathematics and science of Nanjing Normal University. After graduation, I stayed in school as a math teacher. In the early 1990s, Ge Jun began to pay attention to the mathematics test questions of every college entrance examination in Jiangsu Province, and to study mathematics education by connecting colleges and middle schools. In 2003, he was appointed as the president of a private middle school, the experimental school affiliated to Nanjing Normal University, and then served as the vice president of the school of teacher education of Nanjing Normal University. In 2004, 2007, 2008 and 2010, he participated in the proposition work of Jiangsu college entrance examination mathematics volume. Because of the college entrance examination, Ge Jun unconsciously became a "net red", netizens called him "the emperor of mathematics", and examinees jokingly called him "Ge Da Ye". In 2012, Ge Jun ushered in a turning point in his career and became the headmaster of the Affiliated Middle School of Nanshi.
Giving up the simple academic road of colleges and universities and becoming the president of a famous high school in Jiangsu Province, this kind of career choice, which is a little abrupt in the eyes of others, seems to ge Jun to be a natural result. In the 1980s, Ge Jun attended kitcha middle school in Rudong County, Jiangsu Province (later renamed Jiangsu kitcha senior middle school), a remote rural school. At that time, not long after the end of the "Cultural Revolution", there were many outstanding high school graduates and even excellent teachers from college who had outstanding achievements but could not continue their studies due to special historical reasons. Their every move, imperceptibly gave Ge Jun a profound influence - to be an excellent middle school teacher, leading a group of children to enter university to change their fate.
Ge Jun, who had been the principal of a private middle school, took up the difficult task of the Affiliated High School of Nanshi, so that he could calmly face the difficulties and challenges encountered by the school. It is worth mentioning that many headmasters will inevitably alienate from teaching business after they have become the "top leaders", but they have a special interest in middle school mathematics, making Ge Jun the one who is independent. He is not only the core member of the compilation group of senior high school mathematics textbook (Jiangsu Education Edition), the deputy editor in chief of the new curriculum standard senior high school textbook (Jiangsu Education Edition), but also the Editorial Committee of the core journal of Mathematics Education Journal and mathematics bulletin in the field of Mathematics education. Today, he is still in the forefront of teaching, as the school's Olympic mathematics training coach, the students taught outstanding results. Eight years later, it was found that the university scholars who had done research in the ivory tower had already been able to do well in the post of high school president, while the "mathematical emperor", who had a strong passion for mathematics teaching, still worked hard in the field he loved.
Chew the roots, and do great things
Some people say that "a good principal is a good school". Ge Jun has reservations about this. "The extent to which a school can develop depends more on the teachers' team and the external environment of the school than on the actions of the principal." Ge Jun told reporters that the attached high school has a long campus culture and an excellent team of teachers and students. What the headmaster has to do is to make the school operate better on the original track and cultivate more talents for the country and society.
What is "talent"? The answer given by the attached middle school of Nanshi is "to chew the vegetable roots and do great things". Li Ruiqing, a modern educator and headmaster of Liangjiang Normal School, put forward the school motto, which has been talked about by people for more than one hundred years. Ge Jun also has his own interpretation of this: "to chew vegetable roots means not only to be able to bear hardships, but also to have a thorough exploration spirit and humble and low-key quality; to do great things means to have leadership, creativity, and a down-to-earth mind."
The children in the attached middle school of Nanshi never lack the opportunity to bear hardships, such as "Walker action". This is a characteristic activity that the school has been insisting on for 19 years. It is also one of the activities of the school's will training course. The students in senior one need to walk 31 kilometers around Nanjing City on foot. The children in the Affiliated High School of South teachers' college never lack the stage to cultivate their leadership and creativity. Each semester, there are more than 80 elective courses, more than 60 student associations, as well as specialized international discipline competitions, science and technology innovation competitions, leader talent training competitions and other competitions. Diversified courses provide opportunities for the development of every student.
In July 2019, more than 700 freshmen just entered the school received a special "science box" containing experimental manuals, flashlights, protractors, car models, cardboard, sandpaper, micro microscopes and other strange things. Everyone is different. Students are required to complete a difficult experiment and write a survey report according to the instructions of the experiment manual. More than 700 science boxes cost the school hundreds of thousands of yuan, but Ge Jun is very straightforward, because this is a useful activity to cultivate children's spirit of research and exploration, which will be carried out every year.
After a long time in the Affiliated High School of Nanshi, Ge Jun paid more and more attention to the cultivation of students' morality and character. In May 2019, in the middle school enrollment consultation meeting, in the face of a large number of junior high school students and parents who came to the consultation, he proposed "ten cautions" for enrollment in the Affiliated High School of South Normal University, including "caution for those who do not do housework; caution for parents who instigate their children not to comply with school rules; caution for parents who cooperate with their children to be dishonest; caution for those who do not like reading readers, not to be a reporter; caution"; and so on. It can be seen from this point of view. He hoped that every student in the Affiliated Middle School of the South Normal University would know how to respect others, understand others, and learn to think in a different way. The so-called "learn to be a man before learning". Only those who know how to respect others will learn to love and be grateful, will have a sense of responsibility, and can really "do great things".

The teacher in the Affiliated High School of the South teachers' college once joked that he must concentrate on keeping his brain running at a high speed when listening to President GE's arrangement of work, otherwise he would not be able to keep up with his rhythm. However, Ge Jun, the principal who is used to being fast and efficient, knows that education needs to be "slow": respecting students' nature needs to be "slow", inspiring students' thinking needs to be "slow", making students become the pillar of "chewing vegetable roots, doing great things", and even more needs to be "slow".
In teaching, Ge Jun, who has been a math teacher for many years, likes to "build a ladder" for students, which gradually becomes his requirement for school teachers, namely "question series". In his view, students need guidance, teachers need to step by step to help students step up to the peak of exploration. And each student's learning situation is different, which requires the teacher to build a ladder of different progress for each individual, some faster, some slower. "This is an ideal state. In reality, teachers can't be perfect, but I expect them to keep working in this direction."
In recent years, under the leadership of Ge Jun, the attached middle school of Nanshi Normal University advocated "general course reading" to all students and made a lot of efforts for it. "General reading" is to carry out extensive reading for each subject. Ge Jun believes that this can improve the height, depth and breadth of students' research problems, and promote the integration of various disciplines and the improvement of students' comprehensive thinking ability. "For example, for a peach blossom, you can study ancient poetry from the perspective of literature, study its growth characteristics from the perspective of biology, and study it from the perspective of history and geography, so that your thinking can be completely opened, which is" diffuse. "
In order to make the general reading practice "solid", since 2018, the library of the Affiliated High School of Nanshi has increased the annual purchase of books from 400000 yuan to 600000 yuan. The librarian also set up a mobile bookcase between the first floor of the laboratory and the teaching building, and a book corner for each class. All books shall be uniformly allocated, managed and regularly updated by the library. General reading course is also listed as the first of three school-based compulsory courses. Students must complete certain reading tasks and obtain corresponding grades.
If "slow" and "diffuse" belong to the way and way of education, then "man" and "man" are the growth state that GE Jun hopes students will show in high school and even in the future learning environment. "The meaning of" man "is full of hope, high growth, tenacity and luxuriance, while the meaning of" man "is full of learning and savoring the beauty of life." For GE Jun, this is his biggest dream for many years of education, that is to promote the lifelong development of students.
