Polymer Wax: A Multifunctional Innovative Additive in the Coatings Industry

Hits: 107 img

As the coatings industry transforms towards high-end and functional development, polymer wax is emerging as a key additive. Mostly existing in the form of aqueous emulsions, these additives primarily enhance the smoothness, scratch resistance and water resistance of coatings. They also optimize the rheological properties of coatings, ensuring uniform orientation of solid particles like aluminum powder in metallic flash paints, and act as matting agents in matte paints, meeting the requirements of coatings with different gloss levels.
Polymer wax is produced through melting, emulsification, dispersion and micronization methods, with micronization being the most widely used due to its high-quality products. Polyethylene wax is a mainstream type, with high-pressure and low-pressure polymerization processes yielding products with distinct properties. Modified polyethylene wax further improves multiple performances of water-based industrial coatings, requiring only 0.25%-2.0% addition amount.
China's coatings industry ranks fourth in global output, with an annual demand exceeding 1.9 million tons. The expansion of the high-end coatings market has driven the growth of polymer wax demand. Currently, the domestic market scale is about 2,200-2,500 tons, but some high-end products rely on imports. With technological upgrading, the application of domestic polymer wax in coatings, inks and other fields will continue to expand, injecting new vitality into the industry's development.
