China's Reactive Dyes Industrialization: From Initial Breakthrough to Green Development

On January 11, 1958, Shanghai Public-Private Joint Run Runhua Dyestuff Factory (renamed Shanghai Dyestuff Chemical No.8 Factory in November 1966) successfully trial-produced China's first reactive dye, marking the beginning of the industrialization of reactive dyes in China and filling the gap in related technologies.
At that time, multiple forces across the country collaborated to tackle key problems. Dalian Institute of Technology (now Dalian University of Technology) conducted research under the leadership of Professor Hou Yufen and the guidance of Soviet experts. Professors such as Lu Jingsun from Shanghai Institute of Chemical Technology also participated. Runhua Dyestuff Factory set up a research team led by Lin Chuanqiu and Tan Mansheng, with engineers like Xi Xiangyun as the backbone. Jiefang Daily once reported the story of Xi Xiangyun and others "working hard and diligently" to produce reactive dyes, highlighting the key role of team cooperation.
Nearly 70 years have passed, and China's reactive dye industry has achieved remarkable results. Mr. Xi Xiangyun still pays attention to the development of the industry. He published an article in "Shanghai Dyestuffs", proposing to improve production with technologies such as liquid nitrogen refrigeration and nanofiltration membrane separation, promoting the industry's transformation towards green and high efficiency.
