The hydrolysis reaction of silane coupling agent can be expressed in the following forms:
Hydrolysis of trialkoxysilane :
R-Si-(OR)₃ + H₂O ⇌ R-Si-(OR)₂(OH) + ROH
Hydrolysis of dialkoxysilane:
R-Si-(OR)₂ + H₂O ⇌ R-Si-(OR)(OH)₂ + ROH
Hydrolysis of monoalkoxysilane :
R-Si-(OR) + H₂O ⇌ R-Si-(OH)₃ + ROH
In these reactions, the silanol (R-Si-(OH)₃) generated by hydrolysis has the characteristic of easily dehydrating and condensing to regenerate silane (R-Si-O-Si), and the reaction formula is as follows:
2R-Si-OH ⇌ Si-O-Si + H₂O
It is worth noting that hydrolysis and condensation are two competing reactions.
