D4 in Personal Care Products: Regulatory Updates in the EU and US

Hits: 122 img

The personal care industry is closely watching regulatory updates regarding octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4). D4 is widely used in skin care, hair care, and antiperspirant products. Recently, both the European Union and the United States have taken steps to regulate the use of D4 due to its environmental impact and persistence issues.

In the EU, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has classified D4 as a substance of very high concern (SVHC). This decision stems from studies showing that D4 may bioaccumulate in aquatic organisms. Manufacturers are now being urged to reduce the amount of D4 in personal care products and promote the use of more sustainable alternatives.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has initiated a risk assessment of the environmental impact of D4. Although no immediate ban or restriction has been implemented, companies are advised to closely monitor the use of D4 and prepare for possible future regulations.

As the industry demand for more environmentally friendly formulations continues to grow, many companies are exploring alternatives to D4. Water-based silicone oils and less persistent compounds are becoming increasingly popular alternatives.
