The Geography Department of Nanjing Normal University traces back to the history and Geography Department of Sanjiang normal school in 1902. After 1919, it has gone through the stages of the Ministry of culture and history, the Department of Geosciences of National Southeast University, the Department of geography of National Central University and Nanjing University. In 1952, it was founded under the leadership of Professor Li Xudan, the founder of modern human geography in China. In 1997, Jiangsu Provincial Education Commission approved the establishment of the first Institute of Geosciences in China. Discipline has a unique position in the development process of Geography in China. It is the birthplace of the revival of modern human geography and the research of modern map education. It is also one of the main bases for the reconstruction of geographical environment, modeling and simulation, and the research of geographic information science.
The discipline has the National Double first-class construction discipline of geography, the national key discipline of cartography and geographic information system (the first batch), the national key discipline of human geography (cultivation), the "top priority" discipline of geographic information system in Jiangsu Province, the first level key discipline of Geography in Jiangsu Province and the advantage discipline of Jiangsu Province (Class A).
