Known as the "monosodium glutamate of industry", silicone has deeply penetrated various fields of the national economy. By 2025, the global silicone industry has developed into a technology-intensive fine chemical system after 82 years of development. After 73 years of intensive cultivation, China has firmly established itself as the world's largest producer and consumer of silicone.
In 2024, China's silicone monomer output reached 10.5 million tons (equivalent to about 5.25 million tons of siloxane), with both production capacity and output accounting for over 60% of the global total. The apparent consumption volume reached 1.816 million tons, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.3% from 2019 to 2024. In terms of industrial layout, methylchlorosilane monomers have formed a 10-million-ton-level industrial cluster, and significant breakthroughs have been made in the production technology of special monomers, with some products realizing import substitution. In terms of consumption structure, silicone rubber accounts for 59%, silicone oil for 38.77%, and the demand in construction, electronic and electrical appliances, new energy and other fields is strong.
Technological innovation drives industrial upgrading. China's independently developed high-efficiency synthesis technology has increased the stable operation time of fluidized beds to 120 days, with the selectivity of methylchlorosilane monomers exceeding 98.5%. Meanwhile, the application of silicone continues to expand, opening up new scenarios from 5G base station radomes and thermal management packaging for new energy vehicles to biomedical dressings and carbon dioxide capture materials in the carbon neutrality field. The world's top seven manufacturers account for about 75% of the market share, with Chinese enterprises occupying an important position.
Looking ahead, China's silicone consumption is expected to maintain a CAGR of 8%-10% from 2025 to 2030, continuing to lead the global market. The industry will achieve leapfrog development in green process optimization and high-end product R&D, further consolidating its core position in the global industry.
