Sulfonic Acid-based Solid Acid Emerges as a Green Catalyst Highlight with Bright Applications in Esterification and Hydrolysis

     In January 2026, research results of sulfonic acid-based solid acids as new heterogeneous catalysts attracted attention. Among them, TsOH-SiO₂ (silica-supported sulfonic acid) has shown great application potential in key organic reactions such as esterification, deprotection and hydrolysis with excellent performance, becoming an important breakthrough in the field of green chemistry and industrial catalysis. As a super strong Bronsted acid with a pKa value less than 1, this supported solid acid has active sites covalently bonded to the silica surface, can withstand high temperatures above 200℃, and has a stable structure in strong polar solvents. It is suitable for continuous flow processes, enabling large-scale applications from the microgram to multi-ton level, and can be recycled for at least 6 times. In esterification reactions, a 1:1 alcohol-acid ratio can achieve a conversion rate of nearly 100%; the conversion rate of diazinon hydrolysis exceeds 80%; MOM ether deprotection can be completely converted in only 8.75 minutes in flow reactions, which greatly improves reaction efficiency. It overcomes the pain points of traditional homogeneous catalysts such as difficult recovery and large amount of waste liquid, and meets the development needs of green synthesis.
