1600℃ Resistant Thermal Barrier Coating Becomes A Key to High-end Manufacturing, China Accelerates Technological Research

Hits: 188 img

In February 2026, Thermal Barrier Coating (TBC), a core protective technology for gas turbines, has become a key research focus in China's high-end manufacturing field. This functional coating with high melting point and low thermal conductivity can cool the surface of high-temperature alloys by 50-200℃, solving the oxidation and corrosion problems of gas turbine hot-end components under high temperature and pressure. As an essential technology for independent research and development of gas turbines, its performance directly determines the efficiency and service life of gas turbines. TBC consists of four layers: alloy substrate, bond coat, ceramic thermal insulation layer and thermally grown oxide layer. The mainstream preparation process is Atmospheric Plasma Spraying (APS), while a more durable Electron Beam Physical Vapor Deposition (EB-PVD) process is used for aero-engines. China has currently achieved laboratory technological breakthroughs, but faces shortcomings such as lack of industrial application experience, insufficient research on failure mechanisms and blank industry database. At present, rare earth doped modified ceramic materials, new spraying processes and non-destructive testing technologies have become the core directions of domestic research, and relevant breakthroughs will boost the independent development of aero-engine and gas turbine industries.
