Silica Sol Significantly Improves Boiling Water Resistance of One-Component Acrylic Coatings

Hits: 253 img

One-component acrylic emulsion coatings often suffer from softening, swelling, whitening and poor adhesion under high-temperature boiling water conditions, which severely shortens the service life of coatings. Recent research shows that silica sol can effectively solve this industry pain point and become an optimal solution to improve the boiling water resistance of paint films. Nano-SiO₂ particles in silica sol disperse uniformly in the acrylic polymer network, filling micro-pores and greatly increasing the tortuosity of water molecule penetration paths to slow down permeation. Meanwhile, -Si-O groups on its surface form hydrogen bonds with polar groups of the resin. The high-energy Si-O bonds endow the coating with excellent stability, enhancing resistance to softening, deformation and steam pressure to avoid blistering and peeling. Experiments reveal that the optimal dosage of silica sol is 15%-25%. Too little leads to insignificant effects, while excessive dosage causes brittleness, requiring precise adjustment based on formulas. This technology is simple, efficient and highly compatible, providing a new approach for performance upgrading of water-based coatings and promoting green and high-quality development in industrial coating, architectural coatings and other fields.
