Metakaolin, A New Green Building Material, Standardized Under National Standard to Boost Low-carbon Construction

Hits: 317 img

Released in late May 2026, metakaolin, a high-performance white powdery additive for construction, is emerging as a core eco-friendly material for upgrading concrete durability, with China’s national standard GB/T46064—2025 formally regulating its classification and technical indicators. Produced by calcining kaolinite at 600℃ to 900℃ into amorphous aluminosilicate powder, metakaolin boasts much higher pozzolanic activity than regular fly ash and is comparable to silica fume. When mixed into concrete, it chemically reacts with calcium hydroxide from cement hydration to form compact hydrated gels, filling internal pores and greatly strengthening concrete’s resistance to freezing-thawing, seawater erosion and sulfate corrosion while inhibiting alkali-aggregate reaction and steel bar rusting. Beyond high-performance concrete used in offshore projects, nuclear facilities and tunnels, it is also applied in special repair mortar, refractory castables, rubber & plastic functional fillers and heavy metal absorption for wastewater treatment. Partial replacement of cement via metakaolin effectively cuts construction carbon emissions, perfectly matching China’s dual-carbon goals. https://www.tiktok.com/@mia_iota/video/7597717976720149782
