December 24, 2025 - Kaiyun LAB in Shanghai released a sorted research report on supramolecular solvents, systematically analyzing the core characteristics and application potential of this new type of green solvent. As liquid mixtures self-assembled through non-covalent interactions such as hydrogen bonds and van der Waals forces, supramolecular solvents are gradually replacing traditional organic solvents with advantages including low melting points, high biocompatibility, and low toxicity, sparking a green revolution in multiple fields.
The report indicates that supramolecular solvents are mainly divided into three categories: Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents (NADES), Natural Ionic Liquids (NaILs), and Low Transition Temperature Mixtures (LTTM). Composed of natural small molecules such as sugars and amino acids, NADES boasts extremely low toxicity and has been widely verified in cosmetics and drug delivery. NaILs, featuring a wide temperature liquid range and strong solubility, can be used in green spinning and functional membrane preparation. Meanwhile, LTTM has demonstrated efficiency comparable to traditional organic solvents in extracting plant active ingredients, thanks to its low cost and easy preparation.
Although each category has its own focus, all three achieve performance breakthroughs through intermolecular non-covalent interactions. The natural degradability of NADES, broad-spectrum solubility of NaILs, and cost advantage of LTTM make them suitable for different application scenarios. Currently, such solvents have shown application value in fields like natural active ingredient extraction, green chemical industry, and functional material preparation. Their low volatility and low pollution characteristics also align with the development trend of the environmental protection industry.
Despite technical challenges such as viscosity adjustment and large-scale recovery, with formula optimization and process innovation, supramolecular solvents are expected to be more widely applied in pharmaceuticals, beauty care, new materials and other fields, providing a brand-new solution for green manufacturing.
