China's Terpinolene Industry Develops Steadily with Growing Patents and Expanding Application Scenarios

December 29, 2025 - According to the latest report from the New Thinking Industry Research Center, China's terpinolene (also known as terpinene) industry is showing a sound development trend. The number of patents for its preparation methods continues to grow, and application scenarios are constantly expanding, making it a hot product in the high-value-added fine chemical field. Terpinolene (chemical formula C10H16) is a monoterpene compound. It appears as a colorless to pale yellow oily liquid at room temperature, with a pinewood aroma. Insoluble in water but miscible with various organic solvents such as ethanol and ether, it is flammable and toxic, with a boiling point of 184-185℃ and a density of 0.861g/cm³. As a natural component of turpentine, it is widely present in the essential oils of pine, fir and other plants. Products with different purities have significantly different uses: low-purity terpinolene is mainly used as an industrial solvent, while high-purity products occupy an important position in the flavor and fragrance field of cosmetics and cleaning products, and can also be used as preservatives, disinfectants and food flavors. In addition, its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties have attracted scientific research attention, with relevant studies exploring the possibility of its combined use with diclofenac to enhance efficacy and reduce side effects. At present, China's terpinolene preparation technology is becoming increasingly mature. Preparation methods include turpentine two-step catalytic method, α-pinene homogeneous catalytic isomerization reaction, pinene catalytic synthesis and fractionation of terpineol by-products. Enterprises and scientific research institutions have a high enthusiasm for innovation, and patent applications continue to increase. In 2022, Dongguan Hongfu Biotechnology Co., Ltd. launched a patent for the synthesis of nature-identical terpinolene, which has the advantages of mild reaction conditions and simple process; Sichuan Academy of Forestry Sciences developed a technology for separating terpinolene from the leftovers of eucalyptus oil after eucalyptol separation, effectively improving resource utilization. In terms of industrial layout, enterprises such as Sanming Horticultural Fragrance Co., Ltd. and Guangdong Tianlong Fine Chemical Co., Ltd. have formed large-scale production capacity. The 5-ton/year production line of Tongling Andekeming Electronic Materials Technology Co., Ltd. obtained the hazardous chemical safety production license issued by the Anhui Provincial Emergency Management Department in September 2025, further improving the industrial supply system.
