Hits: 6 img

As consumers' demand for natural skincare continues to rise, tea extracts have emerged as a popular raw material in the cosmetics industry, thanks to their rich active ingredients and cultural heritage. In 2023, the total transaction volume of China's cosmetics market reached 1.044545 trillion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 3.61%. In this huge market, tea-based cosmetics are developing rapidly, with both domestic and foreign brands actively deploying related products.
Tea contains a variety of functional components such as tea polyphenols, caffeine, and theanine. Among them, the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and whitening effects of tea polyphenols have been widely verified. As the core component, EGCG's sunscreen and anti-aging effects have been confirmed in multiple experiments. Caffeine has sunscreen, brightening, and bacteriostatic effects, while theanine can soothe and repair the skin. The combined use of the three can enhance the skincare effect of products. The "Catalogue of Already-used Cosmetic Raw Materials" has included 17 tea-related raw materials, covering extracts, monomers, and other forms.
Currently, products such as Fresh's Black Tea series and Inoherb's Dark Tea series are deeply loved by consumers, and categories like tea extract serums and tea extract toothpastes are continuously expanding. The safety of tea extracts has been verified through multiple toxicological tests, with indicators such as acute toxicity and irritation meeting standards, laying a solid foundation for their wide application. However, problems such as poor stability and insufficient transdermal absorption of tea polyphenols still need to be solved. The industry has launched a number of high-efficiency products through technological improvements such as esterification and encapsulation.
As the origin of tea, China ranks first in global tea production. The application of tea extracts in cosmetics not only gives play to resource advantages but also aligns with the development trend of natural cosmetics. In the future, with the upgrading of component co-production technology and in-depth research on efficacy, tea extracts will make breakthroughs in segmented fields such as anti-allergy and repair, injecting new vitality into the cosmetics industry.
