2025 Sees Booming Development of Deep Eutectic Solvents, with China Leading Global Innovation

Hits: 118 img

In 2025, research on Deep Eutectic Solvents (DES) continued to thrive, with the global number of SCI papers reaching 3,204, a year-on-year increase of 9.4%. China took the lead worldwide with 1,555 papers accounting for 48% of the total, and institutions such as the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Nanjing Forestry University emerged as key research forces.
The research featured interdisciplinary integration and achieved breakthroughs in multiple cutting-edge fields. In functional gels, teams from Nankai University, Yanshan University, etc., developed novel DES gel electrolytes and degradable protein gels, demonstrating excellent mechanical properties and application potential. In electrochemical energy storage, DES electrolytes designed by Henan University, Wuhan University of Technology, etc., provided high-temperature stable and long-cycle solutions for lithium-metal batteries, sodium-ion batteries, etc. Additionally, innovative applications of DES in battery binders, waste battery recycling, and interface membrane preparation continued to emerge.
New solvent systems stood out, including Deep Eutectic Biomass Complexes, Eutectozymes, and Hydrogen-Rich DES, expanding the functional boundaries of DES. As green and designable solvents, DES are injecting new vitality into the sustainable development of energy, materials, chemical engineering and other fields.
