On January 26, 2026, "Polymer Material Flame Retardant Study Notes 14: Bulk Copolymerization Flame Retardant Method A" was released, focusing on bulk copolymerization flame retardant technology and providing a new direction for the flame retardant field of polymer materials. This technology embeds monomers containing flame retardant elements such as halogen, phosphorus, and silicon into polymer chains during the polymerization stage, solving problems such as easy precipitation and cumulative biological toxicity of traditional additive flame retardants. Examples in the article show that using tetrabromobisphenol A instead of bisphenol A to prepare flame-retardant PC significantly improves thermal stability and oxygen index; the flame-retardant polyester fiber prepared by the former Hoechst Company (now Indorama) using 2-carboxyethylphenylphosphinic acid achieves permanent flame retardancy and good spinnability. However, this technology has barriers such as changing mature synthesis routes and affecting the original properties of materials, resulting in few commercial cases. With the tightening of environmental regulations and the upgrading of industry demand, bulk copolymerization flame retardant technology may become an important development direction for flame retardancy of polymer materials.
